The Impetus of amenZone
Posted by sommer in amenZone Kids on November 15th, 2009
amenZone was originally created in response to the dire situation surrounding childhood obesity. Below are some statistics on the weight of this issue plaguing American youth.
From the William J. Clinton Foundation, an organization that “focuses on worldwide issues that demand urgent action, solutions, and measurable results,” one of which is childhood obesity in the United States:
- Almost one in four children does not participate in any free-time physical activity.
- 92% of elementary schools don’t have daily physical education classes year-round. Less than a quarter of high school students take daily physical education classes.
- Children treated for obesity are roughly three times more expensive for the health care system than children of normal weight.
- Only 3 out of 10 of high school seniors report eating green vegetables “nearly every day or more.
- Today, nearly 25 million children are overweight or obese.
- Over the past four decades, obesity rates have soared among children of all age groups, increasing nearly five-fold among those ages 6-11.
From KidsHealth.org, a Web site part of The Nemours Foundation’s Center for Children’s Health Media, and whose articles are reviewed by medical experts before posting:
- The percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate, with 1 out of 3 kids now considered overweight or obese.
- Kids younger than 6 spend an average of 2 hours a day in front of a screen, mostly watching TV, DVDs, or videos. Older kids and teens spend almost 4 hours a day watching TV, DVDs, or videos. When computer use and video games are included, time spent in front of a screen increases to over 5½ hours a day! Kids who watch more than 4 hours a day are more likely to be overweight compared with kids who watch 2 hours or less.
- Many kids don’t get enough physical activity. Although physical education (PE) in schools can help kids get up and moving, more and more schools are eliminating PE programs or cutting down the time spent on fitness-building activities. One study showed that gym classes offered third-graders just 25 minutes of vigorous activity each week.
- Current guidelines recommend that kids over 2 years of age get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week.
From Peoples-Health.com:
- More than 70% obese adolescents retain their overweight and obese condition even during their adulthood.
amenZone offers children a fun and engaging way to exercise with their families and peers. Family classes are offered at Cactus Park in Scottsdale Saturdays, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Athletes: How do they do it?!
Posted by Amen in amenZone Nutrition on November 10th, 2009
Most of us are in constant search of a way to regulate our diet. With all the various options out there – i.e. Atkins, South beach, macrobiotics, etc. – it can easily become a hectic challenge. My grandma called this “chasing too many rabbits!” Focus on one, and you have a better chance of catching up with it.
I caught up with one of the Sun’s Athlete, Steve Nash, at Indian Wells, CA (Phoenix Suns vs. Golden State Warriors). The pamphlet handed out during the game touched on his diet routine. Nash is an intelligent player, so there’s no wonder that his take on diet is a well thought out process.
As a primal guy, I was delighted to hear he takes the “simple and natural” approach to diet. No quick fix! No calorie counting! It’s the back-to-basics, common sense way, which may even seem extreme this day and age.
He tries to eat as organically as possible. To quote from the pamphlet handed out at the game, he stated, “I try to eat as much natural stuff from the earth as I can.” Now that’s primal! ![]()
He spoke further, “I stay away from all processed foods, as well as pastas, rice and breads.”
It appears the core of Nash’s diet consists of fruits, vegetables, raw nuts, chicken, fish and supplements you can find at any supermarket.
Typical breakfast: wheat-free cereal with non-dairy milk (almond milk).
Lunch and Dinner: Chicken or fish salad.
On his Facebook page you will find a profound quote of Nash’s reasoning behind his approach: “It’s really just a natural evolution of my interest in being the best athlete I can be and being a healthful person who prevents injury and illness and can perform at my highest level.”

Scottsdale Airpark Event Recap

The amenZone Primal Fitness event last Saturday held at a private hangar in Scottsdale Airpark was rockin’…with DJ Kaydee, that is! If you were there, I bet you were feeling the burn the next day, along with a sense of accomplishment for making it through the primal fitness workout.
Here’s a short video recapping the event and hearing what some people I randomly interviewed had to say about the primal nature of exercising with recycled tires. Enjoy! And we’ll see you at the next event!
amenZone – Scottsdale Goes Primal!

The 100-plus bodies for Saturday’s health event was OUTSTANDING ! As a team we had no idea what to expect…the response was phenomenal. I learned very fast that a great team and good preparation are imperative to having a successful event like the one on Saturday! From our top-notch PR lady Sommer, who was quick to see a camera person was required and assume the role with her “fancy” little camera, to our main team, Kristy, Robert and Brandon, everyone was on point!!!!
Here’s how it works when doing an event, big or small: NO matter how well prepared you are, always leave room for surprises…We were all action, pounding those blackberries, making sure all turned out perfect. I mean Kristy even had room in her head to think of balloons!!! And paper towels, to mention a couple.
Kaydee the Dj raised the roof, loved the class and paid for a full membership after seeing the workout and now does the Scottsdale classes. He was so “sick” (means “great,” haha) on the turn-tables, I saw some guys dancing and trying to party their way through the workout. We began with the end in mind, and the end result was exactly what we envisioned. Our next event will be a masterpiece that is planned to be in Phoenix. The events page on www.letsgetprimal.com will be updated regularly.
US ARMY GOES PRIMAL!!!!
Posted by Amen in amenZone Fitness Workouts on October 19th, 2009
Guys, amenZone met with the army on Friday, “zero six-hundred hours” to be exact!! It was an amazing hour of intense training using amenZone primal routines. I have never seen such order and discipline during a workout!! First, Sargent Kretch got his soldiers in formation, tires in hand in less than “Zero five-seconds”…haha. Needless to say, I was impressed, and that set the tone for the hour journey we were about to embark on!
We needed no music with these guys; they used their heartbeats to help set their rhythm. I could not help thinking the United States Citizens were in good hands!!! It was an all-body workout amenZone (extreme level). I pushed them, and they LOVED IT! We even had a chorus: when I said 1, 2, 3, they’d say BRING IT !! Those two words were all I needed to hear. The energy was unbelievable!!!
We even took a second to giggle when one of the marines tripped over himself, fell over and got right back up, screaming “I never quit” only to fall right back on the grass! It was hilarious.
This prompted me to use one of my all-time favorite choruses: “WE GO DOWN SEVEN! …and they’d reply: WE GET UP EIGHT!! These soldiers are conditioned to succeed! They would accept nothing less; I was humbled by the experience, and honored to have been invited.
Welcome to AmenZone
