Athletes: How do they do it?!

Most of us are in constant search of a way to regulate our diet. With all the various options out there – i.e. Atkins, South beach, macrobiotics, etc. – it can easily become a hectic challenge. My grandma called this “chasing too many rabbits!” Focus on one, and you have a better chance of catching up with it. :)

I caught up with one of the Sun’s Athlete, Steve Nash, at Indian Wells, CA (Phoenix Suns vs. Golden State Warriors). The pamphlet handed out during the game touched on his diet routine. Nash is an intelligent player, so there’s no wonder that his take on diet is a well thought out process.

As a primal guy, I was delighted to hear he takes the “simple and natural” approach to diet. No quick fix! No calorie counting! It’s the back-to-basics, common sense way, which may even seem extreme this day and age.

He tries to eat as organically as possible. To quote from the pamphlet handed out at the game, he stated, “I try to eat as much natural stuff from the earth as I can.” Now that’s primal! :)
He spoke further, “I stay away from all processed foods, as well as pastas, rice and breads.”

It appears the core of Nash’s diet consists of fruits, vegetables, raw nuts, chicken, fish and supplements you can find at any supermarket.

Typical breakfast: wheat-free cereal with non-dairy milk (almond milk).
Lunch and Dinner: Chicken or fish salad.

On his Facebook page you will find a profound quote of Nash’s reasoning behind his approach: “It’s really just a natural evolution of my interest in being the best athlete I can be and being a healthful person who prevents injury and illness and can perform at my highest level.”
